As much as I wanted Season 4 of NBC Hannibal, I was terrified about how the character of “Buffalo Bill” would be treated–I can’t conceive of a way to use that character without transphobia. Best case scenario, the showrunners could have just removed the whole “woman suit” aspect and made it a people suit, gender removed from the equation. Darling readers, NBC’s Hannibal (or should I say, “Haaaaanibal”?) has ended (for now). In preparation for season 3, I read Silence of the Lambs for the first time.* I have to say that Clarice has grown on me, and I’ve discovered the amazingness that is Ardelia Mapp.

IMG_0597While I was rewatching Silence of the Lambs (1991) for my post on NBC Hannibal, I realized I had forgotten about the transphobia in the film. (Or, rather, it was one of many things I didn’t really get when I was in high school and saw it for the first time.)
