More photos from my trip to Senganen, a lovely garden and estate in Kagoshima City. (Part 1 here.)
In 2015, Senganen and the Shoko Shuseikan were recognized as as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site for sites related to the Meiji Industrial Revolution. In addition to the factory (Shoko Shuseikan) and the furnace “ruins,” you can see evidence of this in the garden, such as this water pump:
I loved the view of Sakurajima from the garden, especially peeking out over the buildings.
I’m not as familiar with this period of history in this region as I’d like to be (more of an Edo-period Kaga-han/Noto-han person), but this is a gorgeous garden that’s very different that Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle under the Maeda. Senganen is a treat for the scientific/industrial history enthusiast as well as the garden lover.
