Quick video link today via Buzzfeed’s “If Women In Horror Films Were Played By Men.” (Video is slightly NSFW.)
With straight recreations of important scenes from Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and Psycho, Buzzfeed attempts to start a conversation about how women are depicted in horror films–typically as sex objects, and in the case of the first and third scene, connecting vulnerability (nudity for bathing) with sexually depicted danger or murder.
What I like about the video is that it’s straight-up cis-swap (genderswap) without recoding the actor in the men’s video’s gender expression–not mocking the “feminized” character or attempting to make him more “masculine,” but just showing the scene shot-for-shot with a man instead. How does it change the narrative about victimhood and horror tropes?
