"Let’s hope Abe and his team understand that you can’t just slap a couple bandaids on this issue and claim you’re the champions of gender equality." Hear, hear! Thanks for this post.

Incidentally, this Op-Ed in the NYT made me realize yet again how many similarities there are between China and Japan:

It's hard to know, right! I think if I saw a long term like "blue-arsed fly" in Japanese, I would look it up before trying to use it in conversation. Thanks for the comment and for reading. :)

Oh, I agree! Sometimes ALC marks the terms as "slang - UK" or "slang - US." I don't think there's an "archaic" or just "retro" tag, though. I really sympathize with ESL learners--with all the different countries and regions and their slang, sports metaphors, historical references, and so on, it's really a challenge. Thanks for reading!

With slang terms, ALC tends to be heavy on examples from the U.K., many of which will be completely unfamiliar to learners of American English (and useless, too, if they're primarily interacting with Americans). There still seems to be an incosistent mix of British and American usage in many language programs here, though, so I guess it makes sense for ALC to offer a little of both...
